$15 DIY Dollar Store Softbox!

I’ve been a bit lazy with the lighting for my videos - and, y’know what? You deserve better!

So, I decided to DIY a soft box to create a nice big diffused light source that wraps around and makes my face slightly less horrible to look at. Like I said - you deserve better.

I'm using is a square LED panel that's approximately 9" x 9". If you have a different fixture, or can't find all of the materials, you might have to make some adjustments. If you have any questions, or would like help on adapting this to your needs, leave a comment.

Regardless - I think there are several good ideas here you can run with.

Here we go... How to make a soft box (that's actually pretty damn good) out of crap from the dollar store.

Materials:

  • 4 Sheets Black Foam Core

  • Elastic Velcro Strips

  • Self-adhesive Velcro Circle Things

  • Black Duct Tape

  • Emergency Blanket

  • Shower Curtain

Tools:

  • Utility Knife

  • Ruler

  • Scissors

  • Stapler

  • Glue Stick

I'm of course, using this soft box right now! I'm going to turn off all the other lights I have setup here. Now - let's compare with and without the diffusion sheet. What do you think?

Basically, for about $15 and a few hours of your time, you throw together a very functional soft box. The cool thing about doing things this way is that you can tweak it to your needs or experiment with different shapes and sizes.
